Lost in a VR World

Ducking and diving to avoid lasers, shooting arrows to prevent enemies from attacking, and using a screwdriver and tools to build a robot.

Someone could have walked right up to me and said “Sarah, what are you doing?” and it would have taken me a minute to remember I was standing in a room I know very well, wearing a VR headset, rather than trying to protect a castle from intruders.

This was my first go at virtual reality and despite everything I’ve heard about it, I was still surprised with how immersive the whole thing felt. I actually lost myself in a virtual world.

In one experience I found myself twisting and turning my body, crawling and even jumping around to avoid lasers. And if it weren’t for the cord I felt connecting my headset to some tethered point I couldn’t see, I would never have remembered I was in a game. Everything felt so real. And let’s be honest, the exercise was real!

If you’ve never tried virtual reality, I highly recommend giving it a shot. Mere hours after my experience, I found myself researching VR headsets and how much it would cost to beef up my computer.

Unfortunately, VR is still a little more than I want to pay to bring it into my home.

However, with more headsets being released – including those that use phones and the PS4 headset, it should only be easier and easier to start having more VR experiences.

If you haven’t tried it yet, I highly recommend it. And if you already have a PS4 or phone that is capable for some of the cheaper VR experiences (unlike me), than you should definitely check it out and let me know what you think.
